Lubbock Symphony Serves Record Breaking Number of Kids at Educational Concerts in 2018

Lubbock Symphony seeks $10,000 for Annual Fund

LUBBOCK, TX –2018 has been a busy year for the Lubbock Symphony Orchestra (LSO). The LSO met multiple milestones in the 2018-2019 season, including the rapid expansion of its educational programs. In fact, the LSO served more than 10,000 children through its various educational programs. In the 2018-2019 season, attendance for the annual education concert for area fifth-graders, held in September, included 5,200 kids from 71 different schools as well as homeschoolers.

According to Galen Wixson, LSO president and CEO, the educational programs, as well as the LSO’s other endeavors, are all made possible through grants from local, state and national organizations, sponsorships from local businesses and, especially important, private donations. For example, a $30 donation allows three children attend an educational concert.

“The LSO has charted a path forward of long-term, sustainable growth that would not be possible without the generous funds we receive from the community,” Wixson said. “Attendance for our 2018 Family Concert, the Halloween-themed Maestro Mash, increased 300% compared to the previous year and our attendance at September’s education concert was record-breaking. Thanks to our community support, we are able to pay 100 musicians and staff and provide this concert for free to area families. “

The LSO Annual Fund drive begins Monday, November 19 and runs through December 31. The LSO hopes to raise $10,000 for concert expenses during the current concert season. Only one-third of the LSO’s budget is derived from ticket sales, meaning the LSO depends on donations to continue offering concerts to the community.
