Making an impact through MusiC

2024 Peter and the Wolf Guide:

Lubbock Youth Orchestras

The Lubbock Symphony is proud to have Lubbock Youth Orchestras as a part of our organization! We provide a challenging and enriching musical education experience for students of various ages. Currently, we have four ensembles: Prelude, Philharmonic, Symphony, and the LYO Winds Ensemble. Students participate in weekly rehearsals and perform two concerts each year. Auditions take place in late Spring/early Summer. We are growing quickly and would love to have your students join us!

LSO Education Concerts

For Students

Twice a year, the Lubbock Symphony is honored to welcome thousands of students from across the South Plains region. These interactive concerts introduce students to the instruments of a full orchestra and music of various composers. Educational guidebooks are sent to all attending students and teachers to help prepare for the concert.

LSO Family Concerts

For the whole family

We want your family to experience transformative music together—and have a great time! Our free family concerts include interactive activities and a fun performance style that is engaging for all ages. The music for these concerts are selected from pop-culture friendly movies, TV shows, and other favorites. Everyone is welcome!

LSO Chamber Ensemble Outreach

for the classroom & Community

The LSO Brass Quintet, Woodwind Quintet, and String Quartet want to share their love of music with you! These ensembles are available to perform for students in K-5th grade, nursing homes and other facilities throughout the community. Each 30-minute educational program features a mix of live music and learning. The audience will be introduced to the sights and sounds of various instruments in each ensemble.

About the program

Young Audiences of Lubbock (YAL) operates in partnership with the Lubbock Symphony Orchestra and specializes in intervention-based music education for elementary school students. The mission of YAL is to unlock pathways for learning and utilize music to enhance education.

YAL partners with school districts, administrators, and educators to recognize and identify youth who require intervention. Currently, YAL Teaching Artists reach over 700 students across 10 elementary schools in Lubbock Independent School District. Teaching Artists collaborate with teachers to create a unique lesson plan for students that upholds the standard for educational excellence required by both the National Standards for Music Education and the Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills (TEKS). Each lesson is 30 minutes in length and is designed to support and enhance what the students are already learning in the classroom.

YAL’s programming brings fresh perspectives to academic subjects and incorporates musical learning techniques to address retention, test scores, brain development, and problem-solving skills.

The National Young Audiences Arts for Learning Network

Young Audiences of Lubbock Teaching Artists is affiliated with the national Young Audiences Arts for Learning network. Founded in 1952, the mission of Young Audiences Arts for Learning is to inspire young people and expand their learning through the arts. Our network is comprised of local affiliated nonprofits that collectively impact over 5 million young people each year. The national Young Audiences Arts for Learning network works collaboratively to advance arts in education through advocacy, communications, fundraising, program development, professional learning, and other support. • improved coordination & fine motor skills

  • accelerated brain development in young children

  • increased memory retention, concentration, problem-solving skills, & academic performance

  • relief from stress & anxiety

  • an outlet for creative expression that encourages healthy social interaction
