Making an impact through Music

OUR EDUCATION PROGRAMS

Research shows that music education and participation fosters learning using the whole body and mind. Beginning in early childhood, skills learned by enjoying and making music create neural plasticity and improved language acquisition. By grade school, students involved in school music programs demonstrate higher test scores across subjects.

Education Concerts

The annual Listen Live and Teen Education Concerts provide students with a fun and memorable field-trip to the symphony.

THE MAGIC OF LIVE ORCHESTRA

Each year the LSO welcomes thousands of 5th-12th graders from across West Texas for live, educational concerts during normal school hours. Students from all kinds of schools are invited—public, private, and home school! Those who attend get a taste of a true concert environment with built-in breaks in the music for learning about the different composers, instruments, and kinds of classical music.

CONCERT GUIDEBOOKS

We provide a free, educational concert guidebook for teachers, parents, and students to complement the live concert programming. You may view the guidebook online prior to the concert.

Teaching Artists

LSO Teaching Artist musicians work with local school teachers to incorporate music into classroom curriculum. They follow the State of Texas “TEKS” standards for education, using music to supplement the instruction of various subjects. The program has been adopted by 45 classrooms across 12 LISD campuses, reaching approximately 1,035 students. Plans are underway to expand the program to all LISD elementary schools.

For more information on this program, please contact LSO Education Director Kea Beasley at education@lubbocksymphony.org.

Chamber Ensemble Outreach

We work with musicians to bring fun, educational, and age-appropriate chamber music performance to local schools and the community.

About the ensembles

The Chamber Ensemble Outreach musicians are LSO musicians and Texas Tech University graduate students grouped in brass and woodwind quintets and string quartets. They perform for 3rd and 4th grade students and provide an informative and interactive musical experience. Musicians introduce students to each instrument and give a live performance. These small ensembles also perform throughout the community. You'll find them at assisted living facilities, after-school programs, and the Lubbock County Juvenile Justice Center.

Partnership For Success

Our Chamber Ensembles put on more than 50 performances during a normal academic year. This school and community outreach program is made possible by funding from The CH and Helen Jones Foundations.
